The purpose of this clinic is to teach body control and checking in the best tactical, technical and ethically responsible way. There are three equally important components to checking:

  • Physical ability
  • Technical skill
  • Ethical judgement

In this clinic we will review, teach and demonstrate the skills required for effective body control and checking:

  • Skating skills – agility, stability, balance and transition
  • Stick position – stick checks
  • Containment & Angling – positional control
  • Taking a Check - awareness
  • Body Contact / Checking – Positioning and Gap Control
  • Situational Checking – fore-check, back-check, net front

The clinic is designed to work with attending coaches and players. We will review teaching concepts and techniques.  This is a “hands on clinic”.  The attending coaches will help design on-ice practice plan and work directly with players while getting guidance and suggestions from the clinic instructor.  There may be a short off-ice component as well.

The lead instructor for this clinic will be Al Bloomer, USA Hockey Director Emeritus and member of the Montana Amateur Hockey High Performance Player Development Committee.
